16-18 April 2008, Gubbio (Italy)
Background
The EU adopted regulations on harmonising food supplements (2002) and on the addition of nutrients to foods in Europe (2006). These regulations require the European Commission to set maximum levels of vitamins and minerals, where appropriate, for addition to foods and food supplements in consultation with Member State experts. The ILSI Europe Patterns of Intake Expert Group of the Addition of Nutrients to Food Task Force aims at contributing to these discussions by providing a sound scientific basis for setting maximum levels. The group started its activity by systematically assembling, analysing and compiling existing national intake data. Databases in Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, The Netherlands, Spain and the UK were reviewed.
The workshop will continue the work and go beyond the considerations of maximum levels to draw further results from the extensive database that has been built up by the expert group.
Objectives
The objectives of the workshop are to:
- Gain insight into nutrient intake patterns (base diet, fortified foods, supplements) across Europe and countries specificities, identify data gaps, address the comparability of methodology to measure intakes of micronutrients;
- Discuss the use and misuse of DRVs (particularly ULs) in risk analysis;
- Present the results of the Expert Group on Intake Patterns from supplements, fortified foods and base diet, to a wider audience.
