Meta-analysis of the Relationship between Alcohol Consumption and Coronary Heart Disease and Mortality in Type 2 Diabetic Patients

2006

L.L.J. Koppes et al.

Published in Diabetologia 2006;49:648-652

This meta-analysis has examined the relation between alcohol consumption and disease complications in Type 2 diabetic patients. Pooling of the six available relevant cohorts showed lower risks in alcohol consumers than in non-consumers (reference). The relative risk (RR) of total mortality was 0.64 (95% CI 0.49-0.82) in the <6 g/d category. In the higher alcohol consumption categories (6-18, and ≥18 g/d), the RRs of total mortality were not significant. Risks of total and fatal CHD were significantly lower in all three categories of alcohol consumption (<6, 6-18, and ≥18 g/d) than in non-consumers, with RRs ranging from 0.34 to 0.75. This protective effect of alcohol consumption is larger than that found in the general population. These findings indicate that excessive alcohol consumption may be hazardous in Type 2 diabetic populations. In accordance with findings in the general population it is concluded that moderate alcohol consumption is associated with a lower risk of CHD and mortality in Type 2 diabetic populations.
