The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is rising to epidemic proportions. Studies suggest that alcohol consumption influence the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Two narrative reviews on this topic showed that among moderate alcohol consumers the incidence of type 2 diabetes was relatively low. They were, however, inconclusive about the magnitude of this decreased incidence and about the incidence associated with high levels of alcohol consumption.
The main objective of the now published meta-analysis of prospective observational studies was to obtain insight in the shape and strength of the relationship between alcohol consumption and the risk of type 2 diabetes. The present evidence from observational studies showed, taking into account known confounders, an about 30% lower risk of type 2 diabetes in moderate alcohol consumers as compared to in abstainers. The risk in heavy drinkers was similar to that in abstainer.
