Markers of Oxidative Damage and Antioxidant Protection

2000

Antioxidants are believed to be important in health maintenance through the modulation of oxidative processes in the body. One key approach to assess the importance of antioxidants in human health is the identification and validation of
relevant markers.  Validation of markers involves ratifying an analytical methodology and establishing a clear link between the marker and a particular biological function. There is a clear need at the present time to assess the relevance of currently proposed markers in terms of health benefits and reduction of disease risk. Eventually, this scientific knowledge will provide evidence about the functionality of antioxidants in the diet and their contribution to long-term health benefits.
On 28-30 June 1999 the ILSI Europe Antioxidant Task Force convened a workshop in Prague (CZ) to review :

1 ) the markers of oxidative damage to DNA, lipids and proteins;
2) their validation status;
3) their link to function; and
4) their relevance todisease.

The workshop – structured with plenary sessions and working groups – focused on antioxidants in relation to gene expression and DNA damage, on lipid oxidation and vascular function, and on protein oxidation, ending with a session summarising the
conclusions, implications and recommendations for validation and use of markers in population studies related to health and disease. The summary report based on the
discussions of the workshop has been published in the ILSI EuropeReport Series.
