Process for the Assessment of Scientific Support for Claims on Foods (PASSCLAIM) – Phase Two: Moving Forward

2004

N.G. Asp et al., Guest Editors

Published in European Journal of Nutrition 2004;43(2):3-183

The ILSI Europe Functional Foods Task Force coordinated the EC Concerted Action Process for the Assessment of Scientific Support for Claims on Foods (PASSCLAIM). The first papers were published in 2003 in a supplement to the European Journal of Nutrition, 2003; 42(1):1-119, together with the summary report of the First Plenary meeting and a draft set of interim criteria to assess the scientific substantiation of claims on foods.

In the Second Phase of the project, four new areas were explored: “body weight regulation, insulin sensitivity and diabetes risk”, “diet-related cancer”, “mental state and performance”, and “gut health and immunity”. Based on this experience, the draft wider set of interim criteria were further developed during the second plenary meeting.

The four new explored areas and the criteria with a number of attached comments have been published in the European Journal of Nutrition, together with the summary report of the Second Plenary meeting.

The outcome of these two phases have been used to propose draft consensus criteria for the assessment of the scientific support for claims. These have been agreed by the Final Plenary Meeting held on 7-9 December 2004 and published in the Final PASSCLAIM Document, third publication, in 2005.
